From Rev. HUGH MCALMAN, Minister of Latheron.
LATHERON MANSE, 14th March 1868.
I have much pleasure in stating that MR WM. TULLOCH GAIR, the bearer hereof, has been favourably known to me for the last six years, or thereabouts--five and a half years of which he officiated as a Pupil Teacher in the Parochial School-and that over the whole of that period his conduct, in so far as known to me or the Kirk Session, has been altogether un- exceptionable and exemplary. As the Parish Teacher here has already certified in regard to bis ability and attainments, aud Mr Gair himself will no doubt procure a certificate from the Con- mittee of Privy Council of his having completed his apprenticeship, I consider it altogether un- necessary for me to say anything on the subject. I wish him every success in life, for I believe that he is deserving of it, and will always deserve it.

Minister of Lutheron.
From Mr JOHN HALLIDAY, Parochial Teacher, Salton.
MR WILLIAM TULLOCH GAIR having served an apprenticeship of five years and
a half as a Pupil Teacher in the Parish School of Lutheron, was appointed assistant in the Parish School here, on the 1st April last.
Since that date he has had the sole clurge of the School, and has been engaged in teaching Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, English Grammar, Geography, Latin, Geometry, and Algebra, manifesting much aptitude for communicating instruction to his pupils, and maintain- ing discipline in the School; and it affords me much pleasure to state that, during the few months he has been here, he has discharged all the duties of the School with great ability and success, and to my entire satisfaction, and that of all concerned.
Mr Gair is a person of superior talents and attainments.
His personal character is all that could be wished; his manner, and toue of mind and conduct, are manly, frank, and straightforward; his temper is excellent; his integrity unquestion- able; and his moral character without reproach.
professionally, that is not
I do not know anything of Mr Gair, either personally or entirely to his honour; I have therefore much pleasure and confidence in highly recommending him to the favourable notice of Patrons of Schools.

JOHN HALLIDAY,
Parochial Teacher, Salton.
From Rev, JAMES M`WATT, M.A. & B.D., Minister of Salton.
The bearer, MR WILLIAM TULLOCH GAIR, came to this parish in the month of April last, having been engaged by the Parochial Teacher as his assistant in discharging the responsible and highly important duties of the Parish School. I have the best means of learn- ing that he has taught in that School all the branches of a superior Education, with great regu- larity, steadfastness, intelligence, and success, He is a young man, I conceive, of considerable promise; and, should a suitable opportunity offer, is likely to prove himself a superior Teacher. A wish prevails that arrangements had admitted of Mr Gair's longer continuance in the parish, as also a regret that he is so soon to leave it.
I have much pleasure in also certifying that, during his residence in this place, his moral conduct has, in all respects, been satisfactory,
JAMES M WATT, M.A. & B.D.
16th November 1868,
Minister of Salton.
